FAQs

What is APK File?

APK (Android Package) is a standard package file format most widely used on Android to distribute and install mobile applications and middleware. APK file is officially recognized by Google and can be installed on Android devices by default installer.

What is XAPK File?

XAPK file is similar but more complicated than APK as this standard zip format contains Android app bundles of separate APK packages or OBB files and graphics data in a different package.

Simply speaking, there are two types of XAPK files:

XAPK = Android App Bundle (base APK file + Split APKs files)

XAPK = APK file + OBB file

What is the Advantages of XAPK Files?

XAPK files will save large space of data when you download and transfer large apps on the mobile phone or tablet. Moreover, you can save a lot of time to dowdnload XAPK files. Last but not least, XAPK files lets you download and install region-limited apps without any hassle.

What is OBB File and How does it Work?

An OBB file, or Opaque Binary Blob file, is a compressed archive file that contains additional data that is in addition to the Android APK file. This data can include graphics, audio, and other large program assets. OBB files are often stored in a device's shared storage folder.

The reason why OBB files exist is because Google Play has a limit on the size of APK files. APK files can only be 100MB or smaller in file size. This means that if an app needs to store large assets, it cannot store them all in the APK file. Instead, the app developer must create an OBB file and store the assets in that file.

When an app is installed, the OBB file is also installed. The OBB file is then extracted and the assets are used by the app.

OBB file Storage Location & File Name Format:

<shared-storage>/Android/obb/<package-name>/[main|patch].<expansion-version>.<package-name>.obb
